Its motto, "God, our country and liberty!!", is the clearest clue to what this Currier & Ives lithograph set out to say. The firm issued it in New York in 1861, the first year of the Civil War, when northern printmakers produced many inexpensive images to rally support for the Union. The Library of Congress's copy was deposited for copyright on May 21, 1861, which shows how quickly the publisher answered the public mood after Fort Sumter. Prints like this reached middle-class parlors, where women often took part in home front work such as sewing and fundraising, which is why the image belongs among scenes of women and family life.
