This 1939 poster announces a concert by the Southside Varsity Band of Southside High School in Rockville center, on Long Island, led by director Harvey A. Sartorius. The Federal Music Project, one of the Works Progress Administration's arts programs, sponsored the event, and posters like this one publicized community performances during the Depression. It was printed by silkscreen, a method the WPA poster workshops used to produce bold, flat color at low cost. The date stamped on the back, July 18, 1939, helps place it in time, and it is a useful record of how a local school band was promoted in those years.
