This gelatin silver print shows the torpedo depot at Suda Naval Arsenal, on Suda Bay on the north coast of Crete. In the 1880s Crete was still under Ottoman authority, and the bay's deep, sheltered water made it a useful base for naval work. The print is one of a series from an album assembled for Sultan Abdul-Hamid II, which documented Ottoman naval facilities, ports, and factories, and its captions appear in both Ottoman Turkish and French. The album dates from between 1880 and 1893, a period when torpedoes were becoming a central part of coastal defense.
