Thurgood Marshall is pictured speaking in New York in 1956, a year when he was chief counsel of the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund and deeply involved in enforcing the 1954 *Brown v. Board of Education* decision. Southern states were resisting school desegregation at the time, and Marshall spent much of his career arguing civil rights cases in courtrooms and before public audiences. He later became the first Black justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, in 1967. The record gives few details about this particular appearance, so the picture is best read as a snapshot of a lawyer at work on the public stage.
