Auld Lang Syne" takes its name from the Scottish song Robert Burns revised in 1788 from older folk verse, and the song has been sung at year's end ever since. This c1874 lithograph was printed as a tobacco package label, one of many 1870s labels meant to stand out on a retail shelf. The caption card tags its subjects as music, eating and drinking, and tobacco advertising, so the design seems to link the song's nostalgic toast to the pleasures of a social gathering. Labels like this show how manufacturers borrowed familiar sentiment to make ordinary goods feel tied to the holiday.
