Rising above its surroundings, the clock tower is the feature that sets this drawing apart from other views of Gothic Revival architecture. The style, which drew on medieval English and French church design, became popular in the United States in the mid-nineteenth century, when architects used pointed arches, steep gables and vertical ornament for courthouses, churches and public buildings. A tower with a clock was a civic statement, marking the hour for a town and signaling that the building served the public. Ink drawings like this one were often made for architectural records, publications or presentation, so the careful linework shows how the design was meant to be read on paper.
