This portrait shows Calvin Coolidge with the title "Gov'r," which places it during his time as governor of Massachusetts, about 1919. That year he drew national attention when he called out the state guard to end the Boston police strike, a stand that made him a widely known figure. The photograph was made by the Notman Photo Co., a Boston portrait studio, and its copyright notice indicates the studio registered it for sale and reproduction. Coolidge went on to serve as vice president and then as the 30th president of the United States.
