Unlike many views of farm machinery, this 1921 glass negative centers on a single ox hitched to a plow, with no named farm or farmer in its record. It belongs to the National Photo Company Collection, the work of a commercial studio that produced large numbers of pictures across the early twentieth century. In 1921, animal power still worked many American fields alongside the gasoline tractor, which was spreading but had not yet replaced draft animals on most small farms. Viewers may notice faint streaks and blemishes across the plate, the result of natural deterioration in its original coatings.
