A cakewalk, a party game in which couples march around a ring of numbered spaces until the music stops, gives this print its title and its lively center. Carmen Lomas Garza, a Chicana artist raised in Kingsville, Texas, made the 1983 work as a scene of Mexican American community life, tied here to a fundraising party for the American G.I. Forum, a veterans' civil rights organization founded in Texas in 1948. This impression is numbered 57 of 100 and signed and dated in pencil, and it shows how Lomas Garza recorded gatherings where games, food and community organizing happened side by side.
