Few issues stirred rural England more than tithes, the portion of crops and livestock that farmers owed to the parish clergy, and this etching takes that resentment as its theme. Titled *The parson's cow*, the print was published in London in October 1786 by W. Moore of New Bond Street and is attributed to the printmaker William Dent. Its listed subjects of cows, avarice and farmers suggest a satire on a clergyman's greed at a farmer's expense. Caricatures like this were a popular way for 1780s London audiences to mock figures of authority.
