Titled in French as "Rue à Stamboul," this view shows a street in Stamboul, the old walled core of Constantinople, now Istanbul. The photographer G. Berggren made views like this for travelers and collectors during the late Ottoman period, when Western visitors were eager for images of the city's streets and buildings. The print is useful for seeing how everyday urban life and architecture looked before the twentieth century reshaped much of the old city.
