The title places this view at Bethincourt in the Somme, but the record marks that name as unverified, so the location should be held loosely. Bethincourt was a village in France that suffered heavy damage during the First World War, and the Somme name recalls the 1916 campaign that devastated much of the surrounding countryside. The glass negative comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, the archive of the Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied news photographs to newspapers in the early twentieth century. The record gives no date, so when the picture was taken remains uncertain.
