The head of the Virgin shown here comes from the Notre-Dame de Brebières church in Albert, a town in the Somme region of northern France. The gilded statue of the Virgin and Child crowned the basilica's tower, and shelling during the First World War left it bent over the town, a broken landmark that soldiers and visitors came to recognize. The Bain News Service, a New York picture agency, collected images of news-making places like this, and the negative likely records the statue's damaged state. The record is undated, and its title rests on unverified caption data, so the exact moment of exposure is uncertain.
