This glass negative shows a church at Lassigny, a town in the Oise department of northern France. The title comes from caption cards that the Bain News Service, a New York photo agency, filed with its negatives, and the record does not confirm the subject. Lassigny lay in the path of heavy fighting during the First World War, and churches in such towns were often among the most damaged buildings. Bain's collection holds many news pictures of wartime Europe, so the image is best read as a record of that period's destruction.
