The only identifying detail here is the place name, Hermonville, a village in the Marne department of northeastern France near Reims, which lay in the path of heavy fighting during the First World War. The George Grantham Bain Collection holds about 40,000 glass negatives from the Bain News Service, a New York agency that sold news photographs to newspapers from the early 1900s into the 1920s. The title comes from the negative or caption card and has not been independently verified, and no date is recorded, so the picture's exact circumstances remain uncertain. Its glass-plate format is typical of the period's news work, when such images moved quickly from the photographer's darkroom to the press.
