*The Gay Deceiver* is a hand-colored lithograph published by Currier & Ives in New York around 1871, with the artist John Cameron's signature on the image itself. Its title, which plays on the 19th-century sense of "gay" as showy or lighthearted, suggests a comic, sly character, and the dog subject fits the firm's steady output of humorous scenes for a mass market. Currier & Ives made affordable color prints that were sold widely to households, and hand-coloring by workers at the firm gave each sheet a bright, slightly variable finish. The print is catalogued in the firm's raisonné, which helps trace its place among the many animal scenes the company issued.
