Don't Hurt My Baby" is a plea made on behalf of an infant, and the title sets a tone of protective worry before the viewer reaches the picture itself. Currier & Ives, the New York firm that issued it in 1872, produced sentimental and humorous lithographs like this in large numbers for middle-class American homes, where scenes of children and animals sold well. A 1983 catalog raisonné of the firm's prints, compiled by Gale Research, lists this one as number 1744.
