Rose Sanderson is a single glass negative, and its title comes from caption cards that the Bain News Service attached to its negatives, so the identification has not been independently verified. The Bain agency, founded in New York around 1899, sold news and feature photographs to newspapers and magazines, and its glass plates from the early twentieth century document theater, society, politics, and everyday city life. Because the record gives no date, the image is best understood within that broader Bain output, where subjects were often identified in haste for quick publication. Portraits like this one show how press photographers of the period framed their sitters.
