A man in a derby hat sits at the wheel of an early gas tractor, with a large stack rising in front of the machine. The Case Company collection that holds the print points to the J.I. Case Company of Racine, Wisconsin, a major maker of farm machinery. No date survives with the picture, but gasoline tractors like this one became more common on American farms during the 1910s and 1920s, when they began to replace steam engines and horses for field work.
