The only identifying detail in this record is the name Frank Hayes, and the catalog notes that even this title comes from unverified data the Bain News Service wrote on its negatives or caption cards, so the sitter's identity should be treated as provisional. The picture survives as a single glass negative, 5 by 7 inches or smaller, a format the agency's New York staff used widely for news and portrait work in the early 1900s and later. George Grantham Bain founded the service in 1899 to supply newspapers with pictures of people and events in the news, and its files, now at the Library of Congress, document that era.
