The caption gives only the name E.B. Thomas, and the Bain News Service recorded that title from the negative or its caption card without verifying it, so the identity of the sitter is uncertain. The glass negative is a small-format plate, five by seven inches or smaller, the standard medium for the news studio's work in the early twentieth century. George Grantham Bain's agency supplied newspapers and magazines with pictures of public figures, events, and everyday New York life, and its negatives are a useful record of how press photography developed in that period.
