Here President Calvin Coolidge hands Walter Johnson a diploma marking the 1924 American League championship, the season the Washington Senators won their only pennant of that era. Johnson, the hard-throwing right-hander known as the Big Train, spent nearly his entire career in Washington, so a presidential ceremony in the capital made natural sense. The picture is a National Photo Company glass negative, a format that preserved many Washington scenes from the 1910s and 1920s. The plate's streaks and blemishes come from the deterioration of its original coating, so the image is softer in places than the moment itself.
