Lewis E. Lawes is the named subject, and his name is tied to one of New York's best-known correctional posts: he served as warden of Sing Sing prison in Ossining from 1920 until 1941. Bain News Service, the New York press agency whose glass negatives make up this collection, supplied photographs of newsworthy people to newspapers, and a portrait of a prison warden would have met that demand. Lawes became known for his reform-minded views and for writing about life inside the prison, so his likeness offers a way into debates over punishment in the period.
