Piers jut out from the shoreline in this panoramic view, with the town rising behind the beach in a long, unbroken sweep. Panoramic views like this one were popular in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when photographers used wide-format cameras or stitched exposures to capture seaside resorts and harbor towns in full. Piers of this kind often served as landing points for steamers and as promenades for visitors, so their placement along the coast tells you a good deal about how the waterfront was used. Look closely at the shoreline and the rooflines to see how closely the town was tied to the water.
