Few wartime posters cast a nurse as the central figure as directly as this 1917 American Red Cross design, titled "The greatest mother in the world" and credited to A.E. Foringer. The title turns the nurse's care for wounded men into a figure of maternal devotion, a common appeal in the months after the United States entered the war in April 1917. Posters like this one asked Americans to give money and time to the Red Cross, which was expanding its nursing and relief work at the time. This copy was once held by the Rehse Archiv für Zeitgeschichte und Publizistik, a German archive that collected materials on the history of the period.
