This photograph shows the whaler *Charles W. Morgan* with its sails spread out to dry while the ship sits in dock. Built in New Bedford, Massachusetts, in 1841, the *Morgan* made some 37 voyages in the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans, hunting sperm whales for their oil. It was the last surviving American whaling ship of the wooden-hull era when it was retired in the early 1920s, and the caption's date of about 1927 places the scene during the years it was kept in port. The drying sails are a reminder of the hands-on upkeep that a working sailing vessel needed between voyages.
