The title on this glass negative reads "Smith, Boston N," but the Library of Congress notes that it comes from unverified data written by the Bain News Service on the negative or its caption card, so the subject itself is uncertain. The Bain News Service was a New York picture agency, founded by George Grantham Bain around 1899, that sold news photographs to newspapers, and its collection covers a wide range of early twentieth-century events and portraits. Plates of this size, 5 by 7 inches or smaller, were common among press photographers of the period, who needed images they could develop quickly and send out by mail or wire.
