The only identifying detail this glass negative carries is its title, "Rudolph, Boston," which the Bain News Service recorded on the negative or its caption card, though the title has not been verified. George Grantham Bain's New York agency sold news pictures to newspapers and magazines in the early 1900s, and its large glass plates show how press photographers of the period worked with heavy cameras and fragile materials. Negatives of this size, 5 by 7 inches or smaller, were the standard working medium of that era, so the plate is a useful record of how urban news photography was made before flexible film became common.
