Lady Cowdray, named at the foot of this poster as treasurer of the British Women's Hospital Fund, is the detail that sets it apart from other wartime charity appeals. The text asks women to give what they can toward a home where totally disabled soldiers and sailors would be cared for for the rest of their lives. Published in 1915 and reproduced from Punch's appeal for the Star & Garter Fund, it shows how private donations were expected to supply long-term care for men wounded in the war. Its message that the men "can never be repaid" is typical of the sentiment in British wartime fundraising.
