Soldiers, sailors and women guests are welcomed together to a YWCA hostess house, and the handshake at the center of the design makes that greeting the subject. During the First World War, the Young Women's Christian Association ran hostess houses near training camps, giving servicemen a comfortable, supervised place to meet visiting mothers, wives and sweethearts. Walter Tittle designed the poster, which A. Hoen & Co. printed as a lithograph in 1917 with sponsorship credited to the U.S. Department of Labor.
