Few pictures on this board have less to do with gardens than this one, which advertises William H. Crane, the American stage comedian, in *The Head of the Family*. Crane built a long career on light, character-driven comedy and was one of the better-known actors of his day. Theatrical posters of this period were usually color lithographs meant to be pasted on walls and billboards, so the bold lettering and star billing were designed to be read from across a street. Its placement under flowers and trees reflects how the collection is grouped, not what the poster depicts.
