Few subjects from the Civil War era were reproduced as widely as the Emancipation Proclamation, and this print takes that document as its title and theme. President Abraham Lincoln issued the final proclamation on January 1, 1863, declaring enslaved people in Confederate-held territory free and opening the way for Black men to enlist in the Union army. Printmakers and publishers quickly turned the moment into patriotic and commemorative images, often showing Lincoln at his desk. The record's dates are unverified, but a Copyright Office notation and a January 1864 stamp suggest the print was registered in the months after its likely 1863 creation.
