Few posters of the period carry a title as blunt as this one, which translates from the French as "1914! The murderers!" Printed in New York in 1917, the year the United States entered the war, it adapts a French design signed by Maurice Neumont and dated 1914 into an American tribute to Britain, with an eagle, lion, and wreath as its emblems. The inscription on the stone, "A mon brave ami Hansi," is addressed to Jean-Jacques Waltz, the Alsatian caricaturist known as Hansi, whose wartime drawings mocking German conduct were widely reproduced by the Allies.
