Few holiday poems have shaped how Americans picture Thanksgiving as closely as this one, with its open sleigh carrying a family over snowy fields to grandmother's house. Lydia Maria Child wrote the verses for young readers and first published them in 1844, and the poem was reprinted often in the decades that followed. Its link to the holiday strengthened after Abraham Lincoln's 1863 proclamation helped make Thanksgiving a national observance. Printed verses like this one helped define the day as a family journey home.
