The teddy bear is what sets this advertisement apart from the other food pictures on the board. Toy bears took their name from President Theodore Roosevelt, whose 1902 bear hunt story spread widely, and by the first decade of the twentieth century they were a favorite figure in children's marketing. Pairing one with a flaked wheat cereal was a deliberate appeal to parents, who were being urged to see breakfast as wholesome and fun for the family. The picture is a useful window into how packaged breakfast foods were sold to households in that era.
