A teddy bear and a golliwog sit down together to breakfast on this Golden Shred advertisement card, pairing two figures that were hugely popular in early twentieth-century nursery culture. The teddy bear took its name from Theodore Roosevelt, whose 1902 bear hunt inspired the toy, while the golliwog came from Florence Kate Upton's children's books of the 1890s. Golliwog figures were soon used to sell all kinds of goods. Today their blackface caricature is widely recognized as racist, which makes the card a useful record of how advertisers targeted children and reinforced stereotypes.
