This group portrait shows a family from Singapore's Dravidian community, which the original title labels with the colonial-era term "Kling," a name applied broadly to South Indian migrants in the Malay Peninsula. Frank G. Carpenter, an American travel writer, and his wife Frances made photographs like this on their journeys through Asia and used them to illustrate lectures and articles about the peoples they met. Singapore around the turn of the twentieth century was a busy British port where Indian, Chinese and Malay residents lived side by side, though the record dates the print only to between about 1890 and 1923.
