Few portraits of Rafael Leónidas Trujillo carry a title as openly flattering as "benefactor de la patria," or "benefactor of the homeland," which appears on this color halftone. Trujillo took control of the Dominican Republic in 1930 and ruled it until his assassination in 1961, and he cultivated an extensive cult of personality in which his likeness hung in government offices, schools and private homes. The print was issued around 1938 by the Linder Art Co. of Chicago and registered for copyright, a reminder that American commercial firms also produced and sold images of foreign leaders. Halftone color printing was a common, inexpensive method of the period for reproducing portraits in quantity.
