What sets this lithograph apart on the board is its focus on African American workers and miners, whose labor during the 1930s was often low-paid, dangerous, and poorly protected. Hugo Gellert, a Hungarian-born American artist, made the print around 1933, when he was producing politically engaged graphics for left-wing publications and the labor movement. The title, *The working day*, points to the long hours and the question of workers' rights that run through its subject headings. The print was later included in the 1991 exhibition *Life of the People*, which drew on the Ben and Beatrice Goldstein Collection of realist prints.
