Two portraits of Alexander Graham Bell, taken a quarter century apart, are mounted together here: one from 1876, the year he received his telephone patent, and one from 1900. The earlier picture was made by E.A. Holton of Boston, and the later one by Harris & Ewing of Washington, D.C., where Bell worked for many years. Side by side, they trace the change from a young inventor at the start of his fame to an established elder figure in American science. The pair belongs to a family collection gathered by Gilbert H. Grosvenor, whose family was tied to Bell's by marriage.
