Most images of George Washington show him as a general or statesman, but this engraving recalls his early years as a land surveyor, a trade he took up as a teenager. In the late 1740s he laid out tracts in the Shenandoah Valley, including lands owned by Lord Fairfax, and the work gave him both practical skill and the start of his personal fortune. The print was designed and etched for George Bancroft's *History of the United States*, a multivolume account that helped shape how Americans remembered the founding era. The record gives no date for the engraving, so its exact year of publication is unknown.
