The motorized street sweeper shown here is an early attempt to replace horse-drawn cleaning carts on New York's crowded streets, which were thick with manure and dust before automobiles became common. The photograph comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of news pictures made by Bain, a photographer and news picture agency operator in New York in the early 1900s, and the caption card dates it to roughly 1907 to 1913. Its subject links two of the period's changes: the spread of motor vehicles into city services and the city's growing effort to keep its streets clean.
