Few caves in America were photographed as often as Mammoth Cave in Edmondson County, Kentucky, and this stereograph stands out for its focus on "The Acute Angle," the caption's name for a sharply turned passage in the cave. Stereo cards like this one were sold in sets and viewed through a hand stereoscope, so the paired images gave depth to dim underground spaces that most visitors would never otherwise see. The card carries a copyright notice in the name of Ben Hains of New Albany, Indiana, a publisher of stereoviews, and it dates from about 1898, when the cave was a major tourist destination reached by rail and guided tours. Its caption and tracings are old and unverified, so the exact location of the passage is best read as the publisher's own label.
