The Maelstrom was one of the named features that drew visitors to Mammoth Cave in Kentucky, and this wood engraving shows that underground scene as a 19th-century illustrator imagined it for readers abroad. It appeared in The Illustrated London News on March 6, 1859, at a time when the cave was already a well-known American attraction, reached by guided parties carrying lanterns through its passages. Prints like this one helped British audiences picture a landscape they would likely never see in person.
