Union Station in Washington, D.C., opened in 1907 as a grand gateway to the capital, and this chromolithograph shows it from above, as a bird's-eye view. The Beaux-Arts terminal was designed by Daniel Burnham and built by the Pennsylvania Railroad, which had long wanted a single modern station to replace scattered rail facilities near the Capitol. Color prints like this one were popular with railroads and civic boosters, who used them to present the new building as a symbol of national progress. The print's title and date, 1906, reflect the year construction was underway.
