A Flower Basket is a Currier & Ives lithograph published in New York around 1874, and it stands out on a board full of town scenes, battles and sporting pictures for being a plain still life. Its subject is simply a basket of blooms, the kind of decorative image the firm produced in quantity for parlor walls, where a bright floral arrangement was considered a suitable and cheerful furnishing. Currier & Ives, run from New York by Nathaniel Currier and James Merritt Ives, built a large business on inexpensive colored lithographs, and pictures like this one reached middle-class homes that could not afford oil paintings. The catalog entry cited here, number 2213 in the firm's raisonné, places the print among its 1870s output.
