William Hemstreet's design for an elevated railroad over Broadway, patented by an inventor from Brooklyn, appeared as a wood engraving in *Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper* on March 3, 1866. By the mid-1860s Broadway was crowded with horse-drawn omnibuses and streetcars, and planners were looking for ways to move passengers above the surface traffic. New York's first elevated lines did not open until 1868, so this print captures the city's early thinking about that problem. It is a useful record of the proposals that came before the elevated railways that later reshaped the street.
