A rower bent over his oar and a young woman in a plumed hat watching from the shore make up this color lithograph, which advertises a regatta on the Meuse River. Printed in Liège around 1895 by Gordinne, it belongs to the wave of colorful street posters that spread across Europe in the 1890s, when new color printing made advertising both cheap and lively. The artist, Auguste Donnay (1862-1921), was a Belgian painter and illustrator, and the poster shows how sport and fashionable leisure were often sold together. The date and event details come from an unverified caption card.
