Little is recorded about this print beyond its caption, which names Central America and fruit farming, and its maker, the United Fruit Company. Founded in Boston in 1899, the company built its business on bananas grown on large plantations along the Caribbean coasts of Guatemala, Honduras, Costa Rica, and Panama, and it shipped the fruit north on its own steamers. Company photographs of this kind were often used to present its tropical operations to buyers and the public, and the banana trade remained central to the region's economy in 1948. Today, viewers may notice how such images portrayed plantation agriculture as orderly and productive.
