The glass negative names F. Townsend Martin, though the title comes from caption data the Bain News Service wrote on the plate or its card, and that information has not been independently verified. The Bain News Service worked mainly in New York and Washington from about 1900 into the 1920s, photographing politicians, socialites, athletes and visiting dignitaries for newspapers that needed pictures quickly. Portraits from that trade were often made on small glass plates like this one, which could be printed fast and stored in large numbers. Treat the identification as provisional, but the plate still shows how the agency documented prominent men during its busiest years.
